I don't think the people that think in that manner understand why it's necessary to even have special minority cultural education. I guess when you've been raised in an environment established around your culture and learning from history books written by and for your own people, it's difficult to see beyond that and understand how the shoe feels on the other foot.

They don't. I always try to remain sympathetic though and remember how things are seen from the perspective of the majority in order to not come across as bitter or hostile.

The thing that bothered me most was the fact that he doesn't know that there IS an Irish heritage month, an Italian heritage month, a Polish heritage month even. Like I was so done. There are months for literally everything and everyone. And even if those months weren't in place; the majority are represented everywhere. Immensely.

I try and usually fail. I can consider it when calm and just thinking about it, but when presented with dumb commentary like that IRL, knee jerk reaction is usually stank before any empathy or consideration kicks in.

In the 8th grade, my history teacher said that african-american history month wasn't necessary b/c "African Americans were in America, therefore African american history is American history. And we learn about American history all the time."

I told my dad and he almost RAN up to the school. I barely stopped him.

I've seen that argument used, but it's pretty useless. Not having a black history month wouldn't make black history less underrepresented. If anything the exact opposite would happen.

The amount of ignoramuses you'd see if you Twitter search, "white history month" or "straight pride" will have you clocking people for HOURS
