Proportions are stupid. If Album A sells 4 million copies in one country and 2 million copies in the rest and Album B sells 400K copies in one country and 1 milion copies in the rest Album A is more global as its more popular around the globe. dominating in one particular country means nothing

Whitney sang mostly adult contemporary, her music had urban influences but that was much later in her career and when she did her career globally stalled.

Toni was also more Adult Contemporary and the more urban her music became the more her album sales decreased.

I didn't know Mary had a huge WW following tbh.

I'll give you Alicia, for the most part R&B artists have not had the same accessibility as Poo stars on a WW scale because it's not as appreciated.

Beyoncé sells like a popstar but her music as a WHOLE has been decidedly more urban leaning than straight up pop.

Everyone has a dominant regional market. It's funny how you'll never see those idiotic percentage based breakdowns for those whose markets are from countries/regions outside of the US. Bey's strongest market is the US, the US has a much, much larger market share than any other country in western music. Of course Bey's sales will reflect that proportionally. Even more exaggerated with the way she released this current album given how lopsided the digital market is in the US vs. the rest of the world.

Typically, R&B artists are not big outside of the U.S. and Canada and may have a decent following in the UK, but nothing extreme.

And Mariah stopped being mainly global when she got boob implants, started singing more Urban leaning music, and jumped on the rent a rapper train. Her sales never recovered after she stopped singing adult contemporary and more poppier music.
