Next to her name in the title sequence is 'Santa Muerte', the female personification of death, protection, healing, and safe delivery to the afterlife. She concerns herself solely with protecting the coven, and in episode eleven she
"makes a desperate sacrifice to protect the coven"
according to the mini-synopsis, and her extensive knowledge in botany symbolises growth and replenishment i.e healing. The "safe delivery to the afterlife" hasn't been explicitly shown yet, but it may foreshadow her role in Fiona's downfall. Ryan Murphy says it
gets worse before it gets better
, and the
new Supreme rises
in episode thirteen, which could potentially allude to her taking the throne. I feel like the word 'rises' is too dramatic for it not to allude to Cordelia defying the odds. Another name for 'Santa Muerte' is 'The Lady of the Seven Powers'.
It would be the perfect end to her arc. I would be personally disappointed if, after her midlife crisis, what with Hank's death, doubt in her own strength, loss of good graces with her mother, and the
imminent danger that befalls the coven, as per a vision
in episode eleven, suddenly surging with power could compensate for all of her losses. I suspect she'll
lose her eyes as a desperate sacrifice to regain retrovision
next episode, which compromises her health, thus disqualifying her, at least the criterion for "perfect health".
Considering she
has a vision of the future next episode, whereas she could see the past when she was blind
she might gain some new, simply omniscient, powers.
I might add, why the **** did Nan die? She was showing so much potential and they just kill her off. It could have been prevented if she hadn't been such an uppity bitch around Laveau, and had just given her the baby rather than boasting about Supremacy.

The Orphanage could be great. As long as it's not too much like Asylum.
Is anyone else upset at the lack of strong male characters this season? It's so woman driven. Where are the male witches?

I remember somewhere Ryan Murphy said he wanted to do a season about cults (for example the Manson ''family'')

Murder House
Asylum
Coven
Utopia
I think it goes so well
THEN Freakshow for season 5

There is a lot of potential with this one:
- some lonely kid with evil imaginary friends (some evil spirits);
- pyro-kid;
- Bogeyman;
- faries;
- cruel principal who tortures kids;
- Cannibal cook;
- pedophilia;
- exploitation of kids;
etc.

It would be good, but the backlash it'd receive.

Asylum was the best thing I've watched in my life. Never have I connected so much with so many characters in one series. It's so incredibly executed and each character has their own story and motive which keeps you interested. The acting in it was so sincere and passionate as well, especially Jessica Lange and Sarah Paulson. Murder House was brilliant too, but Asylum just took it a step further. However, I'm quite disappointed with Coven. It's more like a chick flick than the twisted, limitless and thought provoking first and second series. It doesn't seem to have the same amount of effort put in in terms of the directing and acting. I suppose it's more what will appeal to viewers in general though, because it's safe. I'm expecting great things from the next series, and I really like the Carnival/Circus theme speculated. I was also thinking a more city based theme like the underground tube stations..

This episode was not on part with the rest of the season. I'm sorry. This show has a tendency to slay while at the same time, convolute their characters toward the end. I hope they wrap it up nicely because the beginning of the season was promising.
After this season is done, I might rewatch the other two.

This post is so true. Unfortunately it seems a lot of people like this extremely toned down version of AHS so it might be here to stay. I think season 2's strength is that just about every plotline was really interesting. Sister Mary Eunice's possession, the evil Nazi Doctor, Bloody Face and Lana and, of course, Sister Jude's arc were all amazing. The alien plot I thought was the weakest but it was still passable.
This season I think I really only care about the Supreme plotline. Zombie Boy was an embarrassing rehash of Taissa/Evan to appeal to tweens. The Kathy Bates plotline has literally gone nowhere so far and is extremely confusing. Are we supposed to sympathize with her? Some episodes say yes and others say no. The end result is I don't care. Misty just about ruined all suspenseful moments with her resurrection powers and I'm still not quite sure what Myrtle's role in all this is supposed to be. Oh and top that off with a disappointing Stevie Nicks cameo and it's a far cry from Season 2's nihilistic horror.
I will say that Season 3 is fun to watch, but it's fun to watch like the later seasons of True Blood are. It doesn't leave me wondering what's going to happen like seasons past, and if I don't know if I could make the argument that it's actually good television.

Coven is good, but it's not scary enough, The opening credits is the only scary part of it.
I'm done watching this show if season 4 isn't dark and terrifying. It's called American HORROR Story for a reason.

one positive of this season i'll give is that in the first two, people universally hated or loved the characters. everyone loved lana, for example. this season seems like every character is loved by some and hated by others. not necessarily good or bad, just different!

I can't even participate. I'm still in the middle of Asylum and haven't even touched Monster House yet.

I wish Coven was a lot more serious and scary. Even The Vampire Diaries' portray witches better than AHS. The story itself is centered on trying to guess who the supreme is, the interactions within the people of the coven and the fight to determine who is more powerful - instead of actually focusing on the history of witches, their beliefs - their sacrifices - their rituals. Witches are supposed to be mysterious. mystical and scary.

Can we talk about that, at this rate, all the witches are just going to kill eachother.
It would be kind of interesting if that happens, like they just end up killing eachother, and there's going to be no new supreme, and the witches will just die out and have a lesson on greed/lust for power.
AND Or misty strolls through the front door and kicks up her feet, her 'backup plan' was just to wait this whole thing out, etc)

The current story isn't bad, but with a lot of Ryan Murphy shows you kind of have to fill in the blanks yourself.

Bring Nan back.
Zoe and Misty are pretty useless to me.
------
And of course the show centers around who the next supreme is, that has pretty much been the main point of the series. Idk why some are upset about that plot line.
