Dark Horse should have been the second single though, the PRISM era is only in the situation that it's in right now because she let her personal attachment to Unconditionally overshadow the clarity that Dark Horse was the next smash waiting to happen. Had Dark Horse been the second single, she'd have two #1s by now. Dark Horse would have blocked The Monster, for sure. Right about now Timber would be #1 and Katy's third single, "Legendary Lovers", would be taking off.

Unconditionally was crafted like any KP single, to be honest. It has great melody and a big anthemic chorus. Many critics who listened to her album initially also felt like Uncle was gonna end up to be the biggest song of PRISM. Everything seemed in place for Uncle, except the song didn't just take off. Dark Horse, on the other hand, was almost a middling single based on initial descriptions. It was not until it was released as a promo single that things changed actually, so I can't blame Katy and her management for initially going for Uncle.
