The Grammys may be considered prestigious by some, and it's certainly the most famous/respected award show in the wider industry because of the associations with the NARAS, but it is effectively a popularity contest within the industry.
If you offend too many people, or don't have enough friends, you don't win a lot of Grammys.
The only other way someone can win big is if they can't be ignored - See: Michael Jackson's eight awards for Thriller, five awards for everything else (excluding his two legacy awards). See: Madonna's Ray of Light. See: The Beatles' nine awards.
