Madonna’s and Marilyn Monroe’s careers were completely different, their fields were different, and they were not contemporaries.
Besides all her artistic endeavours (movies, plays), Madonna is a music star. Marilyn Monroe was a film star from Hollywood’s Golden Age.
Again, they both take two completely different places in the pop culture realm at different periods of time: Monroe was active from 1947–1962. Madonna has been active from 1983 to present. Madonna turned four the year Monroe died.
In other words: besides becoming an ICON with a look completely different from Marilyn Monroe, Madonna also was in a completely different field.
On the other hand, Lady Gaga not only copies Madonna’s looks, videos, choreographies, but she copies Madonna’s career moves, and is now walking the lane paved by Madonna herself.
Even Lady Gaga’s original press release back in 2008 was written in accordance to Madonna’s mythical early days: Girl “from a rigorous Catholic family, went to a nun’s school, started her career in the NY underground club scene, bla bla bla…”
Madonna did, in fact, make ONE music video related to ONE movie starred by Marilyn Monroe. It was the music video for the song Material Girl. And note that even the use of those images were deliberate:
Monroe starred the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes playing the role of a materialistic woman, someone interested in money and diamonds. Monroe’s image as Lorelei Lee has become an icon in American culture representing a gold-digger.
The sequence Madonna used for her Material Girl video was inspired by the performance of Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend in that movie.
However, Madonna did not simply use that iconic image immortalised in American Golden Age cinema by Monroe and just repeated it, she actually reinterpreted it:
In the Material Girl video, there is a clear distinction between Madonna (the one wearing her own clothes) and the performer doing the Lorelei Lee’s routine on a movie set.
As most of Madonna’s work is based on irony, the irony in the Material Girl video is that for a song that she self-proclaims herself “a material girl living in a material world”, she was offering the diamonds and the gifts she receives from men to her girlfriend over the phone because is NOT a material girl.
And that is the essence of art - that is true inspiration:
You take a piece of work and reinterpret it, you reinvent it. That’s what Madonna has always been doing.
Lady Gaga, however, simply copies and pastes. There is no reinterpretation, no reinvention. Gaga simply copies other people’s works, dumbs it down, and sells it as her own. Madonna could not have found a better word to describe Born This Way than REDUCTIVE.
The most pathetic of it all is when little monsters purposely forget that Madonna was a music and fashion icon with her own look since 1983 and pretend her visual impact was the Material Girl look.
Newsflash: The Lorelei Lee-inspired look had zero-to-no impact in pop culture on its own, at least compared to Madonna’s original look, styled by Maripol.
Anyway, while Madonna became a fashion icon for her look, Lady Gaga, since day one, has been copying other people’s looks: Madonna, Roisin Murphy, Grace Jones, David Bowie… the list goes on and on.
Unlike Madonna, Lady Gaga could not come up with one single original look. Even her meat dress is a rip-off
But what is most aggravating is that Lady Gaga not only copies other people’s styles —- she copies their career models, she copies their performances, she copies their music, she copies everything.
So please, you little monsters need to understand that accusing anyone else of copying is not going to change the fact that Lady Gaga is an unoriginal untalented twat.
