Art and Pop can belong together. She has been ARTPOP most of the time in her career. The thing is there are many variations of Art and she chose some of the messiest, basic things this time.
The concept was a nice idea, just not executed well imo.
And I don't believe she doesn't want to be a pop star anymore. I am sure she is waiting for a new No. 1. She is an artist, artists need acknowledgement. And you can only get that with praise through critics or charts. She is getting neither at the moment.
You can see that also through many of her twitter meltdowns, I mean the first single begs people to cheer for her!
And she won't be able to sell out arenas, tours if she doesn't sell well and therefore also her performance qualities would suffer.
