That is ALWAYS the key -- you must have a lane to last. Rihanna's move into dance-pop was brilliant because she would have eventually gone the way of all the early 2000s R&B chicks that ended up getting steam rolled by Bey. Bey had the mainstream/crossover R&B market on lock.

Ciara, Rihanna, Keyshia were able to create their own lanes. Ashanti/Xtina M/Brandy/Monica made interchangeable music. Amerie had style, but was too similar to Bey with weaker vocals

Only U went top 15 iirc. I remember I loved that song, but it sounded like it was meant for Bey but Ashanti got her hands on it somehow. Bey absolutely killed her career.

Wow Yeah I never really got into her MOTS stuff, Pon de Replay was so overplayed on BET, radio, everywhere. SOS and then Unfaithful was that 1-2 punch that made me realize that her using Rihanna, her first name only, might actually be justified.

Beyonce had an advantage though, she already knew her niche.

DC had a sound like no one else, and even when they didn't their style of singing music was different from other female groups so it kept them hot, radio was all over DC until the day they disbanded.
