She broke through without a hit single in most places including the US. that's the truth. She isn't alone either. The main basis of most new artists' success stories is not hit singles. It certainly wasn't for Justin Bieber. Sure, "Baby" was a hit, but that wasn't the dominant factor in his ascend to success. The establishment of a dedicated following is what catapults most artists to fame these days. Plenty of artists who really are nobodies have hit singles, but that's all they have. You're right about artists needing hit singles to introduce them to the public most of the time, but when speaking of Beyonce(which is whom we were originally discussing), that job was done and taken care of long ago. She doesn't need a hit single at this point, and she definitely doesn't need an introduction.

She was never relevant in the US until this summer, when indeed, she had her first hit single there. Bieber did have hits to break through, and why is he fading now? Exactly, no more hits. Would people be excited for a Janet comeback? No, because her last hit was in the 90s and she had eras after that with no hits. How did GMAYL flop so hard? Because the Hard Candy and Celebration eras damaged Medoner her power. Give It 2 Me and Miles Away knocked her down. When did it all go wrong for Gaga? The BTW singles. You could really feel her relevance slip away with every flop single. ARTPOP was given plenty of attention because the people believe in second chances, but she's in a much deeper hole now and it will take a lot more to get out of it.
Every artist needs hits to maintain their relevance and maintain excitement for their next era. Pepcé does as well. The iTunes stunt was cute and gave this era passable figures but that's it. Now it's on to the next era and she will need that hit song or the sales and airplay of her music will continue to go down and she will soon be nothing but a less successful Mary J. Blige.
