To compare them you kind of have to compare Madonna 5 years into her career with Gaga now, not 2013 Madonna with 2013 Gaga. That said, Gaga is multi-instrumental and has better vocals. Madonna has gotten the knack of making good dance music and knows what works for her after 3 decades. For now I say Gaga just for the way she transforms songs live.

Lady GaGa is a better singer, but I prefer Madonna as a producer and a songwriter.
The question is kind of unfair, because I don't think we've seen all Lady GaGa has to offer. Madonna's true potential didn't start showing until the LAP album, imo.

Hm... Madonna. She has better taste in producers, better song content as well as lyrics, and better album titles. Also, in my opinion, Madonna's voice during RoL > Gaga's (so far).

However, I believe Gaga is talented and has potential to make great albums if she learns to restrict her creative process, has a better ear at picking producers for future albums, flows her voice more properly, and learns to make album titles that don't come off as too edgy or random.

Having said that, Madonna is a better visionary, and has done much more, though has been around much longer.

But to answer the question:

Gaga plays piano and is good enough to include it into her live shows regularly.
Madonna plays guitar and drums, but she isnt good enough, thats the reason we dont see her to play very often.

Gaga is definitely the better vocalist.

Gaga is a songwriter and producer. But so is Madonna, and is much better at it than Gaga.

(for those who dont know the difference between production and songwriting, songwriting includes both, writing lyrics and composing melodies, while production describes mostly mastering, arranging, mixing and ingeneering the sound)

So all in all, gaga is a more technically skilled musician, while Madonna is the better overall artist - much better at creating songs, expressing ideas, visions and presenting them to people.
