That's such old fashioned thinking. CLEARLY, it isn't. Lana Del Rey became a global phenomenon without a hit single. Times are changing. and Beyoncé is like the last person who needs more to add to her success story But she's still doing just that, without a hit single.
I mean what's the goal of a hit single?
A) for it to sell a lot?
B) for it to sell the album?
C) for it to keep an artist relevant so his/her other material(and concert tickets, merch, products etc) will sell?
D) All of the above? Either way the ultimate goal is revenue. Beyonce, apparantly, doesn't need any hit single to generate revenue off her music. A hit single would be icing on the cake, and you're kinda right, she could use one - but she already has enough of them to last for the rest of her career. Pretty much every media outlet has said that Beyonce won 2013, and she really did...without a hit single.

Video Games and Summertime Sadness were both hit singles.

Without those the album would've sold 1 million rather than 5 million, and she would've never been considered a "phenomenon".
The US is not the world.
