So let's say, purely hypothetically, the original post of a thread contains something reportable (e.g. an explicit word, a nickname, whatever), but otherwise the original post itself is innocuous and the thread yields reasonable discussions, what's the proper way to report that single post? Should you hit "report thread"?
Yes. That's why we want you to explain what you're reporting, instead of just hitting the report button.
