A lot of people do see being "latino" as a race. That's why black people who are "mixed with Latino" and vice versa are frequently called "blactinos," which are what many Dominicans are.
The black Dominicans are descendants of African slaves, just like all the black people in the Caribbean.

But many Dominicans are just as African as me, an English-speaking American.

Dominicans have a LONG history of anti-Black racism and self-hate that stems from a deep-seated rivalry with Haiti. 90% of them are still at least somewhat African.
Dominican Republic - 11% black or 1,034,000 + 73% or 6,862,000 (multiracial)
Say wha now?
I think the issue is that we all have different definitions of 'Black' and 'biracial'. I, personally, would factor people of partial Black ancestry in with people of predominate Black ancestry. I just think it makes more sense to me and that's how the world sees it. Correct me if I'm wrong.
We were trying to tell him in the chat that they don't want to identify as black, and not because they want to identify as mixed or biracial.
DR is the same island Hispaniola as Haiti. Haiti is the blackest Caribbean island and DR is the blackest Latino country. But they have issues with identifying as black for w/e reason. Weird because the Afro-Latinos in Cuba and PR have more pride and they're the minority in those countries. White Hispanics are not the majority in DR.

I mean I guess. In the US, most African-American people are mixed with White or Native American to some degree, but many still identify as Black and not multi-racial. I'm not sure why it's not like that there.
Saw American Hustle tonight. It was very good, but I can't believe it's getting legit Best Picture talk. It's just not on the same level as 12 Years a Slave or Gravity. To vote for it over those films would be willfully absurd.
Christian Bale was great, though. The total centerpiece of the movie. And Jennifer Lawrence was absolutely fabulous, even if she felt a bit too young for her role. Amy Adams, however, was woefully miscast. I've never disliked a performance of hers—until now.
Girl no. Latino is not a race. I cannot racially be half Latino and half Asian. That's not how it works.

Exactly, you can't just tell people they are black because you want them to be. Latino has become commonly accepted as a racial term in the United States used on GOVERNMENT issued forms.
A lot of Latinos consider "Latino" to be a race in of itself, and check white by default b/c there are no other options. J.Lo for instance doesn't consider herself white/Caucasian
