Let me just sit this here.
Quote:
Many of you may have heard of the terminology "Christmas Freeze" in regards to radio airplay. What does it all mean? Basically, the Christmas Freeze is when Christmas/holiday-themed songs and year-end countdowns dominate the airwaves from now until the end of the year.
The Adult Contemporary (AC) format's freeze has now begun (click on the blue "AC" tab). You'll notice that the vast majority of the current hit songs there are rapidly losing spins and audience impressions while the holiday songs are doing the exact opposite. From now until December 25 (Christmas Day), expect the holiday songs to ascend to and dominate the top ten while the non-holiday songs will progressively fall in spins and audience impressions and stabilize, or freeze, until it's over. On December 26, obviously, all of the holiday songs will rapidly lose audience and spins while the non-holiday songs will do the exact opposite. Expect the holiday songs to completely vanish from the chart within a week. The chart will return to normal around the 1st of January.
The Pop, Hot AC, Rhythmic, Urban, etc. formats do not all work in sync when beginning their year-end countdowns and holiday songs. Some pop stations will begin to switch over to mixing their playlists with holiday music shortly after Thanksgiving, but, generally speaking, the effect is usually the greatest beginning around a couple of weeks before New Years Day (January 1). During this time (roughly December 18 through January 6), expect previous 2013 hit radio songs (Blurred Lines, Mirrors, I Knew You Were Trouble., etc.) to suddenly resurge in spins and audience while current hit songs (The Monster, Counting Stars, Demons, etc.) will progressively lose spins and audience and stabilize, or freeze, until it's over. Many people tend to be alarmed when they see their favorite songs in the latter predicament. For this time of the year, it's perfectly normal. Around a week after the new year begins, expect those older 2013 previous hits (that were boosted via the aid of year-end countdowns) to rapidly lose their spins and audience while the current hits will resurge again and, ideally, back to where they stopped before the freeze occurred.
This is a detailed, yet needed, explanation of the freeze, but there's always open floor for questions if you're still unclear. Any other chart watchers are free to chime in as well or correct anything that may be inaccurate above. Hope this helps!
