What an ignorant and stupid think to say. All of a sudden everyone feels like vocal coaches in here. Depressing.
Let's start:
Aguilera's tone is richer, and her harmonics work better in order to give a more beautiful, full and well constructed sound whether she is in her lower, mid or upper register. In other words, she is naturally more gifted than Janet is. Who has a small and limited voice when it comes to dynamics, range and amplitude.
Christina likes to do a lot, and she doesn't know how to do it properly, however that doesn't mean she isn't a gifted voice. She certainly has a lot of room to grow, she strains while belting. We could say a lot of theories about why she does it and how oversinging has damaged something but that would be a stupid thing to do cause there are a lot of factors that need to be examined in order to determine such things. Not only theoretical but also practical and physical. Not a lot of singers have shown such a wide range, 4.2 octaves are not something to diminish. Janet is nothing special as a vocalist, NOTHING. Oh, and that Bb5 is horrid as ****, sounds like a dying cat. Janet wouldn't be able to properly sing 85% of Xtina's discography, even if it does in the studio.
The fact that Janet acknowledges she has a little and limited voice, and therefore she doesn't push her voice to do more than it is naturally capable of, doesn't mean she is better than Xtina who is someone with great potential but fails to drive that potential into the right direction. Going by that logic Janet would also be a better vocalist than Céline Dion who as well has a terrible vocal technique. Now are you going to argue about that too? Or you're going to act like the sheep you are and wait for Chimier and others to say a word about it?
Britney's competition at the time was Legend X, SLAYSICA Simpson, Mandy Moore, Willa Ford...and...Hoku so of course she's gonna look amazing when her peers move like a legless nam veteran. She never really was -that- great all her iconic performances are iconic cause she looks hot.
Britney's stans should thank the lord every day that JLO wasn't born a blonde white woman

Well-constructed sound in the lower, middle and upper?
Her lower is atrophic, her middle in tatters and her upper nonexistent.

Christina?! 4.2 octaves?
And Saline's technique is amateurish, not terrible. And she rarely tries to make her voice do what it can't. Her issues lie in the sound production of what she can already do. Christina's issues lie in trying to do what she's incapable of doing.
Christina, while she has vocal talent, has spent all her career singing like she's the voice of the century when she's not even close, and just ends up trying to do more than what she is capable of, whereas Janet's vocal talent is a lot more limited, but she sings within the limits of what she can do instead of what she thinks she can do.
So yeah, Christina can do more with her voice, but Janet is effective in the little she does with hers. She doesn't strain, screech, push, force, yelp, grunt, or make her voice grind like it's going through a meat skewer. Quality, not quantity.
i can't stand "vocals" discussions and arguments. it's always these meaningless exchanges using nonsense words and phrases like "lush" and "rich" and "breadth" and "unique tone." Ican't @ how many snobs think they are the be-all and end-all critic on vocal dynamics.

Welp.
Chimier has spoken, and we will all accept and deal.
Janet uses pretty good vocal technique and doesnt strain on a consistent basis so i'm going to have to go with her.
I agree.
Xtina's voice is just plain exhausting to listen to a lot of the time because she's always belting or hollering, doing unnecessary vocals runs over the poor, defenseless instrumentals given to her by producers.
Sure Janet's no vocal powerhouse, but her voice is always clear and crisp and emotive, and she can go hard if she really wants to.
I don't think Janet's voice can even be compared to Christina, because even if she uses is correctly, her voice is not her biggest attribute, while it is Christina's.
But I do see lots of people pressed at Janet, saying she only whispers... They probably haven't heard a tenth of her material.
