Nah, you are actually mistaken. Keeps' Getting Better was already at almost 800K sold in January 2009 and still selling in the 20K range at the time.

Taking the sales trajectory into account, it would have hit platinum much, much sooner than the 4 years you're trying to make happen. The 2012 date comes from the Billboard question that was asked at the time. (Plus, songs are not always certified right away)
The song was a hit in the US no matter what you say.
