What she needs to do is stop the theatrics, that try to cover everything up, and concentrate solely on making good vocal performances. If they need to be stripped down to acoustic levels, then so be it. How awesome would it have been for her to perform last night in a simple white dress and pearls (like the car scene from the video), and have her softly sing to the audience with no screaming. Just heartfelt.
I don't know, something needs to be done tho... it really does...

I agree that something has to be done about her vocals, but yesterday they were far from being terrible. I mean, let's not forget about the Firework performance in 2010. That was terrible lol
And I loved the whole theatrics of the performance, but I agree she should've done something more stripped down to showcase the vocals and the emotion of the song.
Bill Werde said she sounded really good on the venue, I don't know what happens when the audio is played on TV

I'm just similarly frustrated like spree.
I honestly think the ONLY thing stopping her from being the fiercest, most respected and undeniable queen of pop are her live performances. It's a mess because a good portion of the GP doesn't use her for this very reason. And it's especially frustrating when she has killed this song live previously not even just once, but two or three times. More isn't always better. People aren't always here for huge theatrics, and her widely praised performances of TOTGA are great examples of that. If she ever does step up her game and keeps up the mature image of PRISM, bookmark me. She will be the next Adele.

I couldn't agree more I've been analyzing her performances and I must say that she's been doing the most trying to compensate by putting up visually stunning and creative performances due to her poor vocal abilities during awards/televised shows where her peers are also present. And I think she and her team is aware of this and I don't think spending too much on visuals will cut it. Katy lacks vocal muscle memory, control and proper breathing when performing live. They/SHE needs to invest in that and start taking her craft seriously & stop being a LAZY PERFORMER. I mean most of it has probably got to do with nerves but Katy has just become a walking-self-fulfilling-prophecy-mess every time as I think she worries she'll do horribly and ppl would judge her for that. I've contemplated many times to address this by emailing, PMing her or what not just so she knows that as much as ppl discredit her there are many who believes in her as a performer.

Lack of training gets shown a lot in her performances but she came a long way from the OOTB Era. ( And Firework )
I will sound selfish but my main goal in the Unconditionally Era was to get a physical single

Oh well...
I'm not a hater, but I'm glad you agree with the opinions about the performance...
Let's hope it will enter Top 10 on Hot 100 and Dark Horse will be the 3rd single...

I can't at some of you complaining about her vocals in this performance. It was actually good. Some of you are either too complicated or overly dramatic (or both?). She had bad vocal performances before but this one was actually quite good. Maybe your minds were set to be negative given that she had had bad performances before.
On top of that, I think the japanese element in the arrangement was brilliant.

I just need this song to go top ten so Katy can continue her streak... I don't care if it peaked at 10

Nah, it wasn't good. Her breath was the most perceptivel this year. She was nervous I guess.

So stating that her vocals were bad is being "too complicated" and "overly dramatic"??
Maybe you should have you ears checked? How can anyone think that was good?
The visuals were good. The concept was good. The choreography was good. Her stage presence was good.
But not her vocals. Don't live in fantasy land.

YES, too complicated and overly dramatic. Saying that something is bad when it actually isn't, complaining as if it were the biggest crime ever committed during the show (oh now that's me being dramatic haha). YES, the vocals were good. If you think that the vocals were bad, then you should say that the studio version's vocals were bad, too. The vocals were 90% the same. The parts that were different weren't even off-key. She was singing the harmony instead of singing the melody that we were expecting. Oh drama queens. Shooo!

Katy's performances were never her best spot but let's be clear, she can't do better than that except if she sings acoustically which will happen only on a tour. At least she sings live and although she doesn't dance she always wants her performances to be entertaining and they are. I just think this theme didn't really incorporated with the whole Unconditionally vibe, just like Miley's performance.

I could easily be wrong so don't bookmark this, but I have a feeling that this will miss the top 5. Meaning Katy's two least successful singles would be her only two ballad releases.

Exactly. When I first saw her like a Gueixa I predicted everything. That Japan theme... I don't get the similarity with the song.
Anyway, let's move on and hope for the better.

Relax guys. It's really not that bad if this underperforms as a single, its purpose is to move albums during holiday season. I'll be happy with a lower top 10 peak, no streak can last and it's not like Katy is actually flopping. The standards are just too high and Katy was somewhat bound for an underperformance of sorts I guess.
Wouldn't it be hilarious if her VEVO uploads this shaky vocal performance while the SNL performances never saw the light of day?
