Artists usually see their biggest sales week in their first week. There were plenty of albums in the '90s and before that debuted at a modest or very low spot but didn't see their biggest week sales until months or sometimes a year into their runs.

first week sales weren't all that important until the bubblegum explosion of the late 90s, early 2000s. regardless, Erotica is still a flop and only sold like 3-5M WW in the 90s.

No iTunes, no youtube means people had to wait for MTV or the radio to hear a song, once it blew up everyone knew it and then went and bought the album, not in the first week like how we do, we ANTICIPATE the release date because people promote albums before they come out now.

Multiple videos, singles, and performances before the album now.

What's the point of talking about Erotica's success? It's pretty obvious why it wasn't successful. ARTPOP is even more commercial-friendly. And it was her fifth album - not her third
