Lionsgate's The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has begun its global assault, opening in Brazil on Friday to an eye-popping $2.4 million.
That's nearly triple the gross of the first film.
Catching Fire is opening in Brazil a week ahead of its launch in North America and 65 foreign markets, including China. Domestically, many believe the sequel could approach $165 million-plus in its debut.
Directed by Francis Lawrence and based on Suzanne Collins' blockbuster YA book series, the sequel returns Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth in the title roles.
Catching Fire unfolds as Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) returns home after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark (Hutcherson). Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a victor's tour of the districts, where rebellions are on the verge of breaking out.
