ATRL's Next TOP MEMBER Cycle 10 | EP8: Judges Comments!!
EPISODE 8: BUILD-A-CHALLENGE
New Permanent Judge: Energy
Sadly Red is dealing with some stuff right now, so I had him leave Spain to focus on those things.
Energy has been following this competition, sometimes silently, so for the remaining challenges I asked him if he would like to be a judge and he accepted.

I like this challenge because it embodies a lot of the attitudes we see on ATRL. Polls and discussions of first singles promo and music videos are all over the place. Members here put themselves in manager positions quite often. The problem, however is that it’s subjective. That’s very evident from the countless Base and Charts threads on ATRL, so judging a challenge like this really comes down to the judges personal taste. The music video aspect and ideas add a different dimension to the challenge, and that would be a big factor in deciding who would excel over the others. Pretty good job.

A fun and creative task, and it does allow the contestants to explore their creative side pretty far, but I wish it provided a more complex by-product. Not to mention, it's unoriginal. This has been done plenty of times in the other tournaments (ie. Survivor, I Love Money, Create A Label), so given that I would've figured by now we'd catch wind of this and definitely implemented it somehow, but maybe we already have? On one hand, you've created a fun, nicely organized, and well presented challenge, but on the other it's just play and I wish I would've gotten something less shallow at this point. Something that was just as well executed and creative, but catered to the growth and shift in the community. It's not really a game changer if you know what I mean.

The challenges so far have been about threads, posts, gifs, avatars, etc. This seems more music related than ATRL related. I guess it shows someone critically thinking about an era which many stans can't do.

Meh, a challenge over judging challenges. I really don’t see the point. Noticing the fact that you’re acknowledging to be a Top Member you must know what Top Member quality is. I can understand you’re though process. But that should be expressed and proved in your entries though. This challenge’s entries would be pointless considering the judge panel most likely addressed the issue previously.

Alright, so at first read I was in love with this challenge, but of course having had thought something like this already, I thought of the possibility of how difficult and erm... ironic it would be to judge a judging entry. I'm not entirely confident in that bit yet though, but perhaps Matty would have a better time finding the kinks in it. What kind of Twilight Zone? But I agree with your reasoning. I do believe being able to become semi-professional, logical, unbiased, and literate is an important requirement to be a satisfactory judge (and moderator, might I add), and it definitely demonstrates Top Member qualities.

The subjects have already had their critiques posted by past judges so it'd be difficult to say anything new. I'm not sure how it would work but it was a nice idea.

I like it. I’m not crazy about it, but I feel like with some improvements it could really work. My concern is you are having contestants judge already judged comments and seeing how well things went. I think it may be better to have this as like a two part challenge. You each make an entry, but then you are to judge, providing pros and cons about the entry, and then the judges could judge the entry while keeping in mind what you said. If the pros and cons are right on to what we think, you’ll do well. I’m just talking about what is on my mind, so it’s still a work in progress.

Why though? The Best Of is a very straightforward and basic concept. Other than the sticky announcement and basic banner, Athens needs no more promo. There isn’t anything to advertise, really. And advertising individual Best Of countdowns wouldn’t work as well considering spamming would get points and each person just has their name, year and “Best Of” in the banner.

To be honest though, initially I was like 'eh' because I'm not so taken by advertising or promotion challenges, even though I paid for a domain for last cycle's but I am all for the creative freedom this provides and showcasing potential to see just how the contestants could pros you could deliver some innovative ideas for the community's annual event. I also think this could be done in different ways. This could be utilised as a promotion thread, or a guideline of sorts on ideas for ; although that's more informal and would probably be more fitting as a blog post.

Why can't they create the thread, though?

When I first looked at the entry, I thought it was to promote your best of and I was like oh goodness no. However, fully reading it, I like it. Best of is one of those events that everyone loves and participates in. It’s really the only event ATRL has where trolling and flamebait is put a side and people truly focus on the love for music. Obviously it’d only be for when the cycles are towards the end of the year, but still a great idea nevertheless.

A kind of unoriginal-because-it's-such-an-obvious-idea-but-great-because-someone-thought-something-up-for-it amazing. Now here's for the kicker: We basically already basically do this after every round This is basically just a extravagant way of Matty PMing us for deliberation and asking who would we recommend to continue on to the final three or who has the most potential.... but in public challenge form. However, I do think with a slightly different take, this could work.

This is on the same level as Avery to me, but I like it a bit better. Once again, I think it needs more tweaking and changes, but nevertheless I like it. Maybe instead of sending the portfolio and receiving questions from the judges of the competition, but to a bunch of guest judges like some of the moderating staff. I just got excited with that revision! Let me roll with it and see if I can do it next cycle.

Plus the server is burning in hell somewhere so it’s good you gave almost a year to complete this challenge. The girls will need it.

It's nice to recognize the members who have brought something to the table here, but in no way do I feel it's necessary to make it a requirement to know those members. I would be pissed if Matty made me research some member on here to write down their receipts for a challenge, I don't care for them! Anyway, I get why you'd be inspired to do this and why you'd think it's important, but this wasn't the best ideas for it. I do understand have kept in mind that you were hit with a bit of a roadblock on this challenge.

Okay, now the bad news...this challenge fits more with ATRL's Charm School than with Top Member. We don't do "lessons" here. This is more about becoming a classy member. It's an amazing idea even if somewhat unrelated.

At first read, I was pissed off at this but then I kind of got the drift of what you were getting at. Presenting a way of how you would handle those situations let's the member exhibit character. At least that's what I'd like to believe! If those was created solely as just a aimless game, then you can just scroll up to my comments for DOMINO and call it a night. And those examples definitely wouldn't have worked though, they would need to be a tad more ATRL oriented - not trying to shove your fellow competitors hints down your throat

But… no. Like I said with Domino, how would you judge it? How does this relate to you as a member of ATRL? At least with Domino’s it was somewhat associated with ATRL with a common question asked, yours is just a fun game challenge to do.
Score: 3/10
Now that you have met with the judges, when we return only 5 of you will be moving on to becoming ATRL's Next Top Member!
I expect better from the top 6.
You bitches better show out next challenge.

You provided a great challenge idea this week. However, after reading through the comments of the judges, especially Energy, I agree that is kind of straightforward. I think more revisions will be needed, but nevertheless the Best Of time is great and some of the new members need to know and learn about it.
Congratulations, you are still in the running to becoming ATRL's Next Top Member!

Continue your rise Avery. While it wasn't the most executed challenge out of all in terms of explaining, us judges all got what you were getting at. I think my revision I provided would be a good alternative. Nevertheless, it's something different and could work with some revision.
Congratulations, you are still in the running to becoming ATRL's Next Top Member!

I honestly thought you deserved to be ranked higher. Like Avery, some of us got the gist of your challenge and I got excited with the possible revision I thought of for it. However, unlike Avery, some of the judges didn't see past the fact that us judges would be essentially judging twice. Nevertheless you are working your way back up from the bottom, so great job!
Congratulations, you are still in the running to becoming ATRL's Next Top Member!

I honestly thought you were the worst this week and deserved to be in the bottom. However, most of the judges loved the creativity and how fun it would be. For the others, we didn't see any aspect of you as an ATRL individual would fit into the challenge. So A+ for creativity, but maybe not for this game... unless one of the judges want to make it a special game.
Congratulations, you are still in the running to becoming ATRL's Next Top Member!
Will Domino and Citrus please step forward.
I only have one name typed out in the Gold font below and that person will be moving on to becoming ATRL's Next Top Member.
Domino --- Today has been a rough day for you. We had to have a heart to heart talk to get the spirits back up. ANTM, this has been said every season, is not just a game and is not easy. You are actually finding aspects of you that make you a top member and putting them to work. It can very well be an emotional journey. With that out of the way, let's also say that you are not here because of the meltdown earlier, but because of your entry. It was not that good and we all know you could have done so much better. You weren't ranked best twice back-to-back for nothing.
Citrus --- I am actually very surprised you are here right now. I didn't think your entry was the best, but I didn't think it was bottom two worthy. However, that's why we have five judges because we all do not think the same at times. I have grown to appreciate and love you as a member. Your humor is very light and can easily brighten someone's day, but your challenge really didn't reflect that brand. While who you are and this challenge do not really go hand in hand, it's surprising we got basically a history challenge from a light-hearted humorous member. You have also been slowly improving each week, was this just a slip up and you should move on?
So who stays?

Congratulations, you are still in the running to becoming ATRL's Next Top Member!
If you look at your average rank and total judge score with Citrus', you both are basically neck and neck. What made you stay instead of Citrus, all of the judges felt like you deserve to stay more. Also, look at your average contestant rank, it was basically third out of sixth. The judges believe in you and obviously the other contestants do not think have the least potential if they ranked you third. Just breathe and think you are at the bottom right now, there is only up from here.

I am extremely upset right now. I feel like and still feel like you have been improving and just getting better in this competition and it got cut short. I think the reason why you are being eliminated over Domino is because you never really had that shining moment or multiple of them. You were always there in the middle of the pack, neither being able to succeed over the rest, but shining over those who knew they were bad. I wish you the best, hope you continue to grow as a member on ATRL, and try out again next cycle for redemption. You're new, maybe this isn't your time.
And wow, wasn't expecting the contestants to all rank my entry #1 this episode
This has honestly been the most shocking elimination yet. I wasn't expecting Citrus to be in the bottom at all! This has truly been a shocking episode with the meltdown earlier, and now this. Citrus I love your humor and I hope you apply for the next cycle. I'll see you around blasting your Cher in your Ford pickup
I'm honestly shocked at the bottom 2. It's surprising that Citrus was the last one standing this time around. Matty is right that it just isn't your time. I encourage you to sign up again next time around because you could easily slay once you establish your own personality.

!!
Citrus' run this cycle reminds me of my own on Cycle 8. I think if he returns for another cycle he can really slay.
I think this is a blessing in disguise. Citrus told me that he'll be having hip surgery in a couple days (he said he mentioned this during the Rem elimination talk) and I actually had to send him the next challenge early. He was all like 'If I don't get eliminated' and I was thinking surely he won't get eliminated... but sadly he was in the bottom at the wrong time.
I think this will be good for you Citrus. Now you'll be able to focus on the surgery and recovery.
