He makes the most of a
thin but supple tenor
voice and an agile falsetto, ever accurate but
adding little emotional depth; it’s not the voice for “Heartbreak Hotel,” which he sang to show his Memphis roots. Most of Mr. Timberlake’s own songs supply tidy, efficient grooves for serviceable lyrics: “I’m just a junkie for your love,” he crooned in “Pusher Love Girl” to start the concert, working the old love-as-addiction analogy.
And nearly all of the grooves can be
easily traced back to obvious sources: primarily Michael Jackson, Prince and Stevie Wonder, with a little Marvin Gaye and Timbaland (Mr. Timberlake’s best collaborator) on the side.
