Lady Gaga ARTPOP Album Review
We have had an early listen to Lady Gaga's new album ARTPOP and here is our track-by-track review.
Unlike many albums, ARTPOP is a strong combination of many different sounds, genres and styles. There is something for everyone on this album, whether you like a bit of guitar, rap or pure dance hits. This album gives Gaga many points for versatility and there is no doubt this will invite many new fans to join in and become a Little Monster.
1. Aura
I think this track is the perfect start to the album. It has a murderous beginning and a crazy dance beat. Really picks up the vibe straight away with it's world music tones. It's a great Gaga song, as it's weird, a bit controversial and a whole lot of fun.
2. Venus
This is my favourite song from ARTPOP. It's a little bit weird, and will remind you of your Sailor Moon days. Gaga sounds amazing vocally in this song, and the bridge and chorus have a massive pull factor. I personally would love to see this song become a single, just imagine the music video!
3. G.U.Y
AKA Girl Under You, is a techno track about a girl's quest for power in a relationship. This track has many sexual references but with an infectious beat, it will have you dancing in your seat.
4. Sexxx Dreams
Monsters have already heard this from the iTunes festival but have been absolutely craving a studio version. This song, about the turmoil and battle between a real relationship and other sexual thoughts in your head, is a lot smoother than some of the harder dance hits on the album, and lives up to its title.
5. Jewels N' Drugs ft T.I, Too Short and Twista
This track is a first for Gaga, as it is very much a hip-hop and rap track, something that this popstar hasn't dived into previously. The lyrics are of the classic rap style, which is why Gaga has recruited some of the best rappers in the world to join her. This song definitely shows us a new side to the 'Bad Romance' singer.
6. MANiCURE
This track is a lot more rock based than the songs before it on the album. The songs has a real pop vibe and it would be a perfect party track for night out. There are some great guitar solos towards the end.
7. Do What U Want ft. R Kelly
This is the confirmed second single from ARTPOP and you can really tell why Gaga has made the choice. The production is really fantastic and R.Kelly's part in the song gives it a very chilled out vibe. Again, it's a softer and different side to Gaga.
8. ARTPOP
When I first heard this song, the first thing that came to my mind was hippies. The backing track is very mystical and it's so nice to listen to - it's just a very cool beat. This track really embodies what the album is all about; the coming together of many different sounds, ideas and genres.
9. Swine
This song, as explained at the iTunes festival, is about mistreating yourself so much that you become a little dead inside. It has an emotional underlying story, but the great thing about Gaga's lyrical talent is that she can turn into a track that makes you want to belt it out and dance. Swine has a great electro sound behind it too.
10. Donatella
This song is all about the celebrity and high class life, and is extremely fun. This is one of those songs that I think everyone will want to know the lyrics to. It's the perfect dance and party song, and I feel it will be perfect for a girl's night out,. (Or a boys night out for that matter!) I'm hoping to hear this one out in a club soon.
11. Fashion!
This song is one of the calmer tracks on the album but still upbeat enough to have you dancing. It's nice to hear some piano underlying in this track, which is about the feeling when you look amazing in your outfit. It has the potential to be a great chill out track, and Gaga's vocals really come out in this song.
12. Mary Jane Holland
As soon as this song starts, it commands you to bang your head. The song is an instant party hit, and speaks about Gaga's marijuana-loving alter ego. What I love about Gaga is that she's not afraid to put her life and her "hobbies" out there in the open.
13. Dope
This song is the ballad on the album and showcases Gaga's incredible vocal and piano talent. Originally introduced as 'I Wanna Be With You', it's a love song with a twist.
14. Gypsy
Gypsy is another song that showcases Gaga's vocals and is about finding love after a being alone for a long time. This infectious tune tells the story of Gaga'slife on the road - and Australia even gets a shoutout!
15. Applause
Personally, I think this is the ultimate Gaga song. Not to say that Gaga is all about the fame, but she is all about performance and I feel like this was a great single to welcome us into the ARTPOP era. Get your hands out and start clapping, for the song and for the album.
