He's an unusual case. There's nothing flashy about his work, but he's still got a distinctive style: traditional, simple, clean, with an understated sentimentality. There are certainly other directors who I find more interesting, but he crafts damn fine movies (that feels appropriately retro to describe them) that just strike a chord with me.
