THE YEARS THAT SHAPED MY TASTE IN MUSIC
Ever since I was a little child I had a passion for music and my childhood was mostly accompanied by urban music.
This was the first song that I can think of that had a big big big influence on my taste. Sure I loved other songs way before 2003 but it was Crazy In Love which had a big impact on my taste first.
When I heard it for the first time I was captivated and couldn't stop replaying it. The fact that I was a Destiny's Child fan back then helped a lot. Beyoncé was huge for me.
I heard '1 Thing' for the first time when I was on vacations. I was about to go through a very hard time in my life and this song cheered me up and made it a little easier.
Amerie hit the nail with this song. It gave me 'Crazy In Love' vibes. Sassy, classy, rhythm... It served in any way possible. Plus it became the soundtrack to one of my favorite movies: Hitch.
The excitement was real.
Mais après...
But then the very sad part of my life, that I was afraid would happen, arrived and I was very emotional. 'Hurt' by Christina Aguilera really came at the right time.
The melody touched me and I played this song on repeat every night when I was in bed.
It's my favorite ballad of all times and I don't think there will ever be a better one for me.
Her vocals, the lyrics, the melody... Especially my experiences with it are irreplaceable.
Nelly Furtado and Timbaland brought a new sound to music and I really enjoyed it. Even though this song was released towards the end of 2006 it made an impact on me in 2007.
Her new sound was magical to me. I couldn't get enough of her and she quickly became one of my favorite artists - and still is. This song and all her other songs on Loose remain timeless. I can always listen to them.
After 2007 I didn't feel the same about music anymore. Songs sounded similar and lost the timeless factor. Basically there couldn't touch me...
Until I heard Where Have You Been. This song got me so excited and words cannot describe the way I love this song.
I always loved me some Rihanna, but in 2011 she officially became my favorite artist. When this became a single in 2012 I was extremely happy.

Chapter One - Faded Photographs
Music is a powerful thing. It can bring back so many memories, just by listening to a single song. To me, memories are like faded photographs taken long ago; they're something to cherish, and when a song can bring back fond memories of my childhood - of me playing in the backyard or singing along to the songs in the car, it brings a smile to my face. I started my music journey out with country music, and while my tastes have changed a little since then, I occasionally like to play some old Shania Twain on my iTunes and be brought back to those bright Summer days.
Chapter Two: Changing Tastes
Eventually my music taste evolved, but it never fully changed until one day when my sister was driving me around. She was playing the local pop station, and I loved what I heard. The pounding bass, the upbeat style of the songs, and the fun lyrics weren't things you typically got with country music. Ever since that day, I've been a pop fan, and one of the first songs I was addicated to was Mariah Carey's 'It's Like That'. To this day, it remains one of my favorite pop songs.
Chapter Three - Making It Through
High school isn't an easy time for anyone, but it was especially difficult for me. I never told anyone, but for the vast majority of my high school life, I was bullied. Every. Single. Day. I couldn't walk through the halls without being harassed or called a fagg*t. Of course, it could've been physical harassment, but sometimes words hurt worse. Because of this, I actually entered a stage of depression that lasted quite a long time. I didn't tell friends or family because I didn't want to worry them, so all I had to tuen to was music. Even for those three or four minutes of a
song, I was taken away from all of those dark thoughts. Songs like Firework really reminded me that I am worth it; that things will get better, and that I have people around me who love me.
Chapter Four - The Generic Chapter About Love
Things got better with time, and I finally beat my depression. Spending more time with friends, and focusing on hobbies really put me back in a better place. I graduated high school, and was ready to start my adult life. But of course, nothing ever goes without a hitch. The only person I've ever had feelings for moved away. The problem was, I didn't realize it until after they were gone. Now all I'm left with is memories of the time we spent together and regret. Part of me wonders every day how different my life would be if they had stayed, or if I had at least let them know my feelings for them. Ke$ha's 'The Harold Song' always makes me think of them. Regardless of what happens, I will always keep them in my heart.
Chapter Five - Naega Jeil Jal Naga
Fast forward to today. As I wrote this entry, it really hit me that I've been through a lot in life. I beat depression, made it through some heart ache, and dealt with the loss of several family members. While it looks easy on paper, that's a lot for one person to deal with in only a couple of years. My self-esteem and outlook on things has improved so much since then, and I truly feel I am the best that I have been in years. I'm ready to experience new things, meet new people, and truly get my life started. Naega Jeil Jal Naga - I am the best!

My musical taste can be best summed up by three words. Personal, because it represents what I value and what I've been through. Mellow, because music is my emotional release; it calms me down and relaxes or soothes me. Eclectic, because I like a variety of different sounds, styles, and artists; my music taste combines a lot of different types of music that you would not normally associate with one another.
What better song to start the journey through my musical taste than "Intro" by The xx? This song represents how I am not limited to pop music; my taste expands into different genres and is not limited by vocalist or sound. The rest of my entry will showcase how I appreciate different styles of music and how my musical taste has evolved throughout my life. This song also showcases how I value the relaxing and mesmerizing qualities of music.
"Landslide" by Fleetwood Mac shows my appreciation for older music. It also represents how my mom has been extremely influential in deciding my musical taste. This classic record is her favorite song of all time. I remember my mom popping in Fleetwood Mac's eponymous album and playing this song over and over in the car every morning. Because many of the songs that she likes have been passed on to me, a large portion of my music taste is dedicated to songs from the past. This held especially true when I was younger.
"I Hope You Dance" is another song that is extremely close to my heart. My sister is a dancer, and this song has always reminded me of her. I originally heard this song during one of her recitals, and from then on, it has always been dear to me. Although my sister and I haven't always been the closest, this song reminds me that there are far more important things, like my family, than some of the petty stuff I worry about. This song also represents my diverse taste because it is, yet again, another genre (this time, country-pop crossover).
This song really represents when I started truly exploring music on my own, without the help of my parents or my peers. After listening to this song, I fell in love with John Mayer and with his "coffeehouse" style. Several of my other favorite artists (specifically The Fray) perform with a similar style. This genre is both relaxing and entertaining, but also slightly different from typical pop music or the music that I learned about from my family.
"Farewell" by Rihanna is one of my favorite tracks from the pop superstar. Obviously, she is my favorite current pop artist. Thus, her music accurately represents the more mainstream music that I listen to. However, Rihanna is also a representation of my music taste as a whole. As I previously mentioned, I like a variety of music, and I do not limit myself to genre. Similarly, Rihanna has experimented in several genres, something I value in a musical artist. The song "Farewell" encompasses everything I love about her, especially her warm tone and how she emotes, as well as provides the perfect closing to the journey through my music taste.
