Nobody is even taking the MJH part as literal as you are. She doesn't try to make herself look cool for smoking weed. She's said she's had drug problems and weed helps and lets her escape. So jeeze shush and critique the sound of the song.

Idk I personally disagree. There are way less subtle songs about smoking weed see Mary Jane Shoes by Fergie (which is pretty good, imo) or Blueberry yum yum by Snoop Dog. Were you embarassed when Rih dressed as the weed princess as well last year?

Who cares people write songs all the time of drinking alcohol or write songs all about it or write songs about how they love partying all the time. I don't see the difference between those and a marijuana song.

I know what Mary Jane means and she used it to create a persona. The song is essentially about escaping from reality through weed/alcohol etc. "I think that I could be fine, if I could be Mary Jane Holland tonight." Stop taking it so literal. It's not like she's singing, I smoke weed, go me!

The only way to put this is... Rihanna is effortlessly cool. Lady Gaga tried way too hard to be cool with this song. When Rihanna talks about weed or sings about being high, it doesn't seem contrived. It's just a natural thing for her to do.. and it's not because she's cool because she does it... she's just effortlessly cool.

She really should have just left this topic alone. Or put stache on the tracklist.

She doesn't have to think its a masterpiece. A bad song is a bad song and I find it appalling that the fans stand so adamantly behind songs like this and Hair because it compels her to stray from quality tracks like Dance In the Dark and continuing to make painfully literal and unimaginative tracks such as this. This isn't good pop music.

And Hairs metaphors are blatantly obvious even to the mentally incapacitated. It wears its intention on its sleeve, the track is asinine in its attempt to be empowering.
