Bur as far as how popular he was and is? It's at least in part from him being white. It's not his fault at all, but it is what it is.

Some people might look at the situation and say "he became famous despite being white".

I do think being white for sure helped him overseas. Most people I know only know Kanye and Jay-Z by name or by some of their features whereas everybody knows Eminem's songs from around TMMLP1 and TES.
