Avatar received wide acclaim and box office success. Gravity is achieving the same thing. 12 Years A Slave will have the buzz going into award season.
As noted in many reviews though, the impressiveness of Avatar laid solely with the SFX. It actually only has an 83% on RT. The plot was an unoriginal mess. 12 Years has the momentum, but after Argo winning last year, I see the academy going for the more mainstream film.

We'll see. Watch 12 sweep all the precursors and leave Gravity in the dust. If that happens, it will win Best Picture.
