It was umich actually. I've never pre-ordered an album on iTunes (only morons do that) so I didn't know that's how it works.
I still have trouble buying it though. Interscope clearly believes it had nothing to do with pre-orders.
I don't think it used to work like that. I first heard about it when One Direction's marketing team made it clear that's how they were releasing their singles prior to the album. I think they even made a video with the members describing how it worked.
