why is this song so polarizing? It seems a good chunk hate it, while others think it's fantastic, "song of the century", and Grammy material worthy. Why the extremes, and who do I trust?

Me too, me too. It's not too complex and overproduced and the song lets Katy's vocals shine front and center. This and Warrior are why I still worship Dr. Luke.
Just like Roar it's not boundary pushing or inventive or anything but it's got MASSIVE commercial appeal. Plus I think there's something genuinely sweet about this song so people may dig it a lot.
What people don't understand is that the adults have the power when it comes to the holiday season. This song is not only universally crafted, but is it the song that has the potential to bring a positive message in love AND life in general.
If the AMAs sent TOTGA from #11 to #4 on iTunes in 2011, imagine how much of a boost this will get once she performs this in a month there.
