 The honest truth is that the GP thinks a ballad is more credible than any other type of popular song in today's world. More specifically, a simple piano type ballad or a ballad that showcases great lyrical/vocal ability, like Stay When I Was Your Man (for piano & lyrics), I Will Always Love You (vocals), Just Give Me a Reason (lyrics, vocals, great vocal duet blend). 
No surprise a lot of 80s/90s ballads are terrible and were looked down upon at some point. So many of them sound so dated.
