The music industry is still booming, just in other ways. There's streaming now, which is free, and I believe artists/their labels get paid for it, digital downloads are increasing each year and they generate millions, and whatever losses that labels experience from the decline in the album-selling market, they probably make up for with inflated tour prices.
And I'd prefer to be a musician. I think there's more liberty in music-making. Plus musicians make more cash.
Plus, as you mentioned, musicians seem to be more idolized than actors/actresses.
