Obviously, the 'G' in this context doesn't carry its traditional sound. Instead, it works in a more progressive way that alters the pronounciation of the last syllable in the word.
Normally, he'd be right. The combination of 'GN' in most words with an Anglo-Saxon origin automatically renders the 'G' silent. Problem is,
lasagna is of Italian origin, as far as I know, and I'm not too sure the same rules of phonetics apply.
...and with that comprehensive analysis, the sting of the line is pretty much gone by now.
