Coming off BTW + hip surgery + media blackout, she performs twice on TV, does (an amazing) interview for a rather niche magazine, relies on hamsters. Minimal promo at a time when she DOES need it.

It does in a sense.
Gaga promoted so much last era that she got overexposed, so she can't just come back out of the blue and be once again all over the places
BUT that doesn't mean that she shouldn't do ANY promo either.

I just think, and hope, that Gaga and her team "gave up" on Applause and will come HARD with the second single.

Gaga said that the new single might be a song we haven't heard (which will be the case, obviously).
And I have the feeling that a few songs from the Swine fest will end up on the App (assuming it's still happening) instead.

Lets be really honest, if Gaga has any type of longevity with Artpop, it'll be Rihanna-sized. Not Katy-sized.

I'd be okay with front-loaded at this point if it's a big number.
