She wrote the lyrics to "Royals" at her house in only half an hour, and was also listening to a lot of rap and hip-hop-influenced music, especially Lana Del Rey, while writing.
Lorde has mentioned that "all those references to expensive alcohol, beautiful clothes and beautiful cars – I was thinking, ‘This is so opulent, but it’s also ******** [BS].’"
