Hm, I ask why not? Fans of those genres supported her while she was blue-haired for Teenage Dream. The album hasn't remained a successful catalog seller off of her pop audience, I can assure you. If one thing listeners enjoy with an established artist is to see them transform, and I think Katy out of all her contemporaries right now can succeed at that.
Plus I think we shouldn't read too much into what she is saying. Certainly, she won't go straight up indie-rock on us, but probably just strong influences with still her hint of pop. I think if you listen to her duet with John Mayer "Who You Love", she could succeed with an album with songs motivated by that kind of sound.
