I haven't had a stanning phase for WP but the Droid 1 was definitely the best phone out of that bunch.
I still have that iconic phone that started the huge rise of Android in america

Don't worry, you'll go through your WP phase soon enough.

So first, you have to check whether the hardware itself is compatible with the other carriers in your area, depending on who it was branded to when it was sold or the model number. So (I'm not from the US, so I'm going off memory here) T-Mobile and Verizon use very different mobile tech - let's call these "bands". Some phones aren't "pentaband' and cannot access all the bands. I think the iPhone 5 is, no idea about the 5S. But the 4 and 4S were not pentaband and you couldn't switch a phone between certain carriers. So just make sure your hardware is compatible first.
Once you know your hardware is compatible, you either purchase an unlocked phone or get the phone unlocked. iPhones are a bitch to unlock compared to other phones. Get the carrier to do it and your life will be much easier, or purchase it unlocked. Once it's unlocked, you can stick a SIM card from any carrier that has a compatible "band" with your phone. Virgin Mobile should work.
The sim card doesn't necessarily have to have a plan attached to it. If you are able to pick up a sim card at random for like $5 somewhere, they generally come with a base prepaid plan attached to it. Beware of the size of the sim card you pick up - for iPhone it's a nano sim card. The sim card comes with a barcode. Either on your carrier's website/via phone/in person, you can switch your current plan onto the new sim card by simply saying "I got a new sim card, can I switch over to this card" OR just pick up the card of the new carrier you want (Virgin Mobile), set it up in the store with a new plan/on the phone/online (Canadian Virgin Mobile lets you do this - but it's always easier to just use a human being to set things up if you're not certain). The card itself is not special - it just needs to be the correct size and have a legible IMEI/barcode. Some carriers sell a separate card for LTE 4G service (get that one).

Aah, thank you so much.

I really don't understand why people bother with the iPhone 5c. It's a total scam.
Like, spend the extra dollars to get a phone that is more up to date and of better quality and buy a coloured case for it.
I'm not surprised by the fact that the 5s is sold out everywhere due to limited quantities and Apple employees are pushing the 5c on customers. Apple has more to gain with the 5cheap.

I've seen some people theorize that while the 5C is cheaper for new markets like Apple wanted, it actually serves to drive 5S sales in the US. Ever since they introduced the 3 tiered pricing scheme, a big chunk of iPhone sales have been the older generations. Now, more people who would've saved $100 might get the 5S instead, because there's such an obvious differentiation between the models now.
This is of course assuming that people really care that much about what people think of how much they paid for their smartphone, but it's not a bad theory
I do think the 5C is actually a good option for some people though. ex. my little brother will be old enough to get a phone soon, and I think my parents should buy him the 5C. It has a more durable casing, and even just $100 cheaper is a good deal when you're dealing with my little brother, who will likely break it sooner rather than later

It's not a total scam. It'd be a nice upgrade for anyone having an iPhone 3GS, 4, or -- even possibly -- 4S. A lot of people are thrown off by the plastic backing, however. I do believe that if that wasn't there, the phone wouldn't be as horrible as people are making it out to be.

STORY TIME!
So Apple finally launched the feature where you can check to see if the 5S you want is in stock at your Apple store. I checked and saw that they had the gold one at stock. So I hopped in my car and rushed to my Apple store. I explain to the guy what I saw and he directed me to a table. I waited and waited and this lady basically told me that the online system is different than the in-store system, so I'd have to complete the online part to get it. But the problem was, I used an upgrade to get the white 5S a few days before, so it was saying I had to pay full price. And the lady basically told me it was my problem. So I stood back and just thought to my self and keep clicking to see if it still said "Available Now." So I turn around and I see that this guy was trying to get the SAME exact phone as me, a Gold 32GB. So now I'm spazzing, lost, and confused. So eventually the screen said "Not available for pickup," and I had almost given up hope. So I kept noticing this Apple employee was telling the guy "Hold on, hold on" and "We're looking." So needless to say, no one knew I was listening the entire time. And the Apple employee slides to the guy and was like "What size do you want in the gold ones" so the guy goes "Any. I don't care." So the guy goes, "No, Really, What sizes do you WANT." So he got 2 64GB...and not 5 minutes later, another employee comes out the back with 2 gold iPhones, and I was FUMING.
So after they got done with the transactions, I knew my skills had to come out. I walked up to the lady and said "I saw how you guys just checked for those 2 for that guy and I was wondering could you do the same" and she goes "No that was a different problem" and I said "Oh I know, I listened to the entire thing" So basically she tells me that she was given orders by a manger, and that I would have to talk to him. So this is where my lie came in. I told him what I told her, and he said the same thing "it was a customer service issue" and I said "Oh yes, Mines was too. I called and talked to someone about the iPhone 5S gold stock, and they told me to check the Apple website, and if it says it's in stock, then it is, and that I needed to get up there ASAP." After that he told me to stand by a table and that it would all be taken care of. After a few minutes he came to me and asked me what size I wanted, and in a few minutes, the exchange had been done, and I was the new owner of a gold iPhone. Everyone was looking as I walked out the store.

A lot of the people I've heard from who has actually used it in store or bought it, says it feels/looks a lot better than they thought it would. The supply constrains of the 5s and the supply fill of the 5c seemed to have met in the middle to make that 9m number.

Can someone explain to me why they're not shipping any of the gold ones until late October?

I'm still at how the 5s was BARELY promoted yet it's on back-order until like November -- considering, of course -- but the 5c WAS promoted heavily and it's available everywhere. I mean, it's really not that bad of a phone.
People are smarter than I thought too.
