I don't think the plot alone is compelling enough for most viewers in Breaking Bad. If you don't buy into their commentary in the early seasons, you'll probably find the show boring. And even for the seasons with great and widely accessible plots (like the last), the plots don't stand alone in a way that makes the show great. It's the whole picture, the character arcs, that make it great. The show gets better with each season and the execution in season 5 is on a whole new level.
