I don't think he overacted. His daughter has been kidnapped and is probably dead. It wasn't a part that called for subtlety.
I feel like in some parts he wasn't very convincing and was a bit forced ( i.e: in his house when he talks to the detective for the first time with the stuttering and yelling).
