ATRL has a severe problem with overvaluing chart peaks and sales. Nobody cares in the real world. If you were to ask the average person who #1 is NOW they probably wouldn't know, let alone what songs were #1 10 or 20 years ago.
People go on about "impact" and "iconic" all the time here, but I hope they realise that a meat dress (for example) is going to be infinitely more recognisable and referenced in future than a successful single...
Yes, pop classics will of course be remembered, but hit =/= classic. Mariah, to use your example, has all those #1s but only about 2 of them will be her defining classics that stand the test of time. Roar smashing now could mean nothing by next year, let alone a decade.
