I agree with you. "New" and "different" is what people like. Rolling in the Deep, Somebody That I Used to Know, We Are Young, Thrift Shop, Royals, Blurred Lines, etc...

Yes, Applause and Work Bitch is something different in pop, but overall people's heard it before. It's nothing bad. Generic does not equal bad and the word "generic" has a bad stigma to it. "Roar" is a recent number one that is generic, generic is not a bad thing.
