Diamonds isn't really generic. Maybe if it was released today, it would have been considered more safe. It even had a bit of a slow start because it came out of left field.

Diamonds is the most creative lead single Rihanna has done. It's indie-influenced. Much more innovative than her the majority of her albums with cliche dance-pop material
