it's not about claiming them. It's about the fact that if a straight guy's friends see that he has a bunch of knee songs on his spotify playlist, they're gonna get a good laugh and give him hell about it. While Rihanna music is pretty much 100% acceptable, and Beyst pretty acceptable too (unless it's Single Ladies )
He has such a beautiful voice, so cute, and decent enough songs. 
Dance music was becoming popular when he debuted, so he never had a chance.
