To answer the question, I usually try to help them if I can. I mean, I'll keep my distance if he looks shady/ dangerous, but not if he's just harmlessly sitting on the corner asking for change.
Besides, generally speaking, they're not that different from you or me. There are dozens of different factors that could leave someone without a home; maybe he got laid off, or his wife left him, or his kids left him, or the market took a bad turn, or his house burned down... or he's a war veteran who couldn't get his old job back because the injuries he got in battle rendered him unable to work. Anything could have happened.
It's so easy to dismiss them all as dirty, creepy weirdos, but for the most part, the homeless are just normal people who were victims of bad luck or poor financial planning.
