Applause was everywhere during its first week. If it wasn't because of the leak it was because of the release being the same time as Katy. She also hyped her comeback single for almost a year while she was on a high grossing tour. Rihanna announced Diamonds 2.5 weeks before she released it and it will still outpeak Applause.

I literally haven't heard Applause on the radio since the day it came out, so 100% of people who actually do hear the song must be buying it. Truly a beloved smash single.

The song is clinging on itunes because the IMMENSE promotional campaign behind it. A ton of live performances, commercial, and itunes adds that seems to stay there forever yet the song still fail to reach #1.
