Baby One More Time, Oops, Crazy, Slave, Toxic, and Everytime are all pretty signature and memorable Britney songs. And (I may be mistaken) they have all reached #1 WW, if not in the states.
In the U.S., the general population was "over" Britney after "Britney" in the same way that they were turned off by Gaga with "BTW." It became publicly acceptable and even popular to make fun of her and embarrassing to say they enjoyed her music.
People still bought it in secret though I remember seeing other b!tches (me included) sneaking the ITZ CD beneath a pile of other albums and pretending "Hey, what's this doing here? Oh well, may as well buy it." at the checkout line at Best Buy
