A lot of them couldn't even play in the most profitable/popular venues because of the segregation laws, so in a sense The Beatles were competing with themselves.

The Temptations were MASSIVE.
Bob Dylan was slaying (he's white)
Rolling Stones were slaying (they're white)
The Monkees SLAYED LIVES (they're white)
The Beatles had tons of competition. They just came out on top because they were the catchiest early on, then they solidified their legacy with the experimental middle years.
