The climax of the chorus is 100% down to the instrumental (in the KoL version). Vocally, he's not impressive enough to really belt the chorus..studio and live.
Bey does similar (maintain the same vocal styling through the song) just her band don't build for the chorus. Also, her 'overblown' version is worsened by the echo on the mic. It came in handy during the chorus, but it did indeed stop the verses from ever feeling lighter.
