J.Lo is stan-worthy. I like most of her albums, she can sing well enough live, she's a great performer, she always looks great or presentable, she's filthy rich, has a nice family, and enough record sales to live off by and a decent performance at the box office. And I also like most of her films. Her tour did really well [considering it was her first one!] and she has a considerable media presence as well.
The only are area where it's hard to defend her is acclaim. That is just impossible to do.
She doesn't get her due because she doesn't deserve any. A few cute bops here and there, but so did Paula Abdul, Jody Watley and Avril Lavigne. Where are the praises for them? She gets what she deserves... little to nothing.
Don't compare JLO to Jody. She was a great singer.
Cultural appropriation is about exploiting a culture. Not every non-black person who does hip hop/R&B or every popgirl who does an urban song is appropriating. What Gaga did is just doing something different/hopping on a trend etc. What Miley is doing however is a classic textbook ex. of appropriation, and I would argue that would Gwen did with the Harajuku girls who never talked was also exploiting as well.
Lady Gaga's ARTPOP (the song) performance was better than any Beyonce performance. Barbarella psychedelic perfection. Too bad the music didn't measure up. Her hit-making days are behind her.
