College IS a gamble. Home equity loans are the third most popular method to finance a college education. You know what that means? If you're dirty ass child doesn't graduate from college with a very well paying job within 6 months you get your house taken away.

Food stamps cant even buy toys, ipads etc. it only allows you to purchase food items.

The government is nice enough to have safety nets, and that's worked to keep people from starving, and will continue to work. No you don't understand how the government works. It's priorities are fine (not excellent, but good enough as it is) it just needs tweaking. It doesn't have enough money to afford this government funded trade school phenomena you're talking about. Actually going to a HS that has the tools you need to learn in itself is a privilege because HS's are funded based on property taxes (in most states, not mine where its based on how the officials want to distribute it)

Do you see the problem in that?

The US education system is so messed up, even in many so-called third world countries you can go to university for free and then get a good job. In comparable first world countries like Canada, Australia and most places in Europe tuition is usually free or below 5k a year.

Of course there's the fact that you still need money to live, eat, pay rent, etc while studying (and since you're studying you can't have a full time job to support yourself), which means you need an outside source of income which is another barrier for people of poor backgrounds.

Yea I don't think you can. My family always uses it to buy food..I'm sure they'd use it for other things if they were allowed to.

Because of luck/hard work. Mostly luck.

It shouldn't be harder for poor people to do that because they were born poor. There are plenty of people in the middle and upper class who effortlessly through HS and college and land themselves into a decent career.

Why should we uphold the status quo rather than making it easier for everyone to get where they wanna go?

Maybe it'd be better if America had a benefits system more like the UK? To be fair though, over here some people get far too much money undeservedly. I'm all for supporting people and giving everyone a decent standard of living, but when you have people on benefits who literally aren't even looking for work and spend all their money on drugs, drink, smoking and get FREE housing yet there are people who work full-time jobs struggling to get by, it's quite annoying.

I've seen local restaurants where they accept food stamps. Also there's an urban clothing store called Citi Trends and they accept food stamps as a payment method.
