Tegan and Sara play promo session for music journalists

While on tour in Cologne, Tegan and Sara spent the morning and afternoon doing press, welcoming journalists in a hotel suite to talk about their new album as well as play an exclusive acoustic session with songs from Shipwrecked. They performed five songs, perfectly capturing the overall theme of Shipwrecked while still showing off its musical and lyrics diversity.
Atlantic Running
Surprising the listeners by opening with the album closer, this track was an energetic start even in the stripped down, acoustic version. Actually, this arrangement made the instrumental of the song more intense, bringing out the thriving guitars which imitate the notion of running even more, giving this track its characteristic restless feel.
Youth
The familiar lead single still hasn't gotten old one bit, sounding different than anything else out there with its semi-dark, melancholy instrumentation and deep lyrics. It's the most downtempo song in this session, providing a moment for everyone to contemplate and go back to their own days as an adolescent as Tegan's unique voice sang about the pains of growing up with a genuine intensity.
Don't Call Me Empty
Upping the tempo again they play this indie-rock inspired tune, which almost channels an angry vibe in the chorus and some of Sara's strongest vocals to date. The keyboard plays a sweet little melody throughout, creating a soft balance to the dominating guitars without being too sugary. When Sara almost shouts the final “Don't Call Me Empty” at the end of the last chorus, everyone in the room is holding their breath at the intensity.
Heart Waster
The second single continues the theme of a broken heart but shows a different situation, talking about unrequited love. Tegan takes over the lead vocals again, her voice floating along with the poppy synths that add the right amount of spark to the acoustic guitars. It's easy to see why this song made it to be a single, and is set to become their biggest hit yet.
Straight Backward
Finishing the performance is the song that has risen to fame without being officially released, serving as the soundtrack to Tegan and Sara's extended campaign for equality and gay rights. Creating an almost anthem-like character when performed at their concerts, it brought an equally uplifting and inspiring vibe to this smaller set, lighting up the room and remembering listeners of why their music is so relatable.
The performance was taped and later uploaded to the website of German music magazine Musikexpress.
After the performance, Tegan and Sara answered questions from the journalists and did personal interviews with different publications, to be released at a later date. Georgia
